Currently, updates are being made in the library to accomodate an increase in books. The library has been moved from its prior location downstairs to its current location upstairs. The librarians are working on changing from VHS to DVDs. They are expanding their parenting and teaching section. With 38 shelves of fiction books ranging in reading levels up through middle school, they are yearning to see more fifth and sixth graders pass through. New shelving is being put in and with that comes time devoted to shifting books. Although most of the videos are checked out at this point, more will be available at the end of summer. Make sure to stop by the library and check out their new selection and variety of books and videos!
Before the Children’s Library was founded, each Sunday school class had its own library. In the late 1960s, the classrooms decided to combine their collections to form the Children’s Library you know today.
Starr and Ralph Johnson currently run the library, and have been doing so for over 20 years. They moved into the current location in September 2004. The library is completely run by volunteers, and the Johnson’s buy all the books with their own funds. The library accepts donations, and all unused materials are donated to the church fair. They do have one volunteer, Ann Lofton, but they could always use more!
The library is open from 8:45 am to 1:00 pm on Sunday mornings. The Johnson’s have never taken a full inventory, but they estimate the library contains 7,500 to 10,000 books, with 1,000 waiting to be shelved. You can check out up to five books per person for two weeks, and two movies per family for one week. There are no fines for late books, but every week a movie is late, they charge $2, then $5, then $10, then $15, or the price of the video if it is never returned.
The Children’s Library is one of our church’s wonderful resources, so come by and check it out today!
The Children’s Library is open from 8:45 am to 1:00 pm every Sunday. Be sure to visit and come see what’s available.
You can find a map of the church campus here. The Children’s Library is not shown on the map, but it is located in the upper level of the Children’s Center. Enter the building from the western entrance and take the stairs up and the library is located at the end of the hall.
