Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade

Rrrrrrrrriiiinnng Your teacher announces, “It’s time for recess.” You and your fellow classmates head for the playground before the teacher even finishes the sentence, and that breath of fresh air lets you know that you’re free from class for that short time of playtime. T. J. Detweiler and his friends go to Third Grade Elementary and also enjoy the freedom of Recess. Last year, they were in fourth grade; this year they’re fifth graders—big kids.

Everything is different now because they are older and see things much differently. The Board of Education has passed a new policy taking all the fun out of school. The playground, the lockers, the cafeteria food; they were all taken away. T. J. is the first to complain in Principal Prickly’s office, but all Prickly says is, “the little guy can’t change anything.” This inspires T. J. to devise a plan to get the Elementary school T. J. knows and loves back to the way it was. He has great success and changes Prickly’s previous statement to, “the little guy can change everything.”

T. J. displays great courage in all his adventures, and has fun with it, too. When Prickly said it was impossible, T. J. finds a way to do it. We can also be that courageous hero that takes a stand for what we believe in. “…with man these things are impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 9:26 says that we can do anything if we have God on our side. If our faith is just the size of a mustard seed, we could move mountains. With God anything and everything is possible. Some people say, “the sky’s the limit,” but I don’t agree with that, because with God there is no limit to what can happen. With God all things are possible.
